Why I have gray hair, Reason #127

Ok, so late Saturday afternoon, I'm on the phone with my best friend and I'm lamenting because I hadn't heard from TheManTheMyth and Thing 1 who were in Utah racing in Round 7 of the Kenda National Hare & Hound Series and then my cellphone rings and it's Thing 1 so I tell BFF I'll call her back.

This is how the conversation with Thing 1 went:

T1:   Maaa!
Me:   Are you alive? (I always ask this and he always answers "No")  How'd you do?
T1:   I was first.
Me:   Really?  That's great!
T1:   First to the hospital.
Me:   No, really, how did you do?

As you can tell from the above exchange, I tend to take statements like that with a grain of salt because Thing 1 and his sidekick, Rental Kid Wyatt who accompanied the Menfolk, have a tendency to yank my chain.  One time RKW was the one to check in after a race and told me that Thing 1 had won his class and I was all woo-hoo and and made the Big Announcement to everyone only to find out that not only did Thing 1 NOT win his class, he didn't even race and I felt like an idiot when multitudes of people were all, "Huh? What are you talking about?  Kevin didn't even race!" so ever since then I have a hard time believing anything either of them tell me.  The boys who cried wolf kind of thing here.

Well, this time pictures speak louder than words
Yep.  That's my little boy's right shoulder and it's not where it's supposed to be.

He's trying to tell me what happened but the cell service from somewhere in BuFu Utah is lousy and it takes about 50 eleven tries to get a good enough connection so that I can get the story and he tells me that he went down about a whole, whopping mile into the 114 mile course and I'm all, "are you frickin' kidding me?  A whole mile??" because I'm such the concerned parent whose first thought is for the welfare of her child and not the fact that I could have spit further than he went in the race.  And he also tells me that by far, this was the worst pain he has ever experienced, even more than when he broke his kneecap in half and nobody could or would give him any pain relief until he got to the hospital although if this had been a local race with his club members present, he would have been able to pick and choose from the medications offered to him by our Fine, Upstanding club members but the Jackrabbits weren't there so he had to suffer but he said the hospital gave him an IV with some Good Stuff so he was still feeling just fine.

He tells me that he and TheManTheMyth were on their way from the hospital, where they had to knock him out to put his shoulder back into place, and heading back to the pits to get Rental Kid Wyatt who had finished the race in the meantime and noticed his ride was gone and thought TheManTheMyth and Thing 1 got tired of waiting for him and left his ass and then had to wonder how was he going to get home from Utah.

I assumed they would either stay another night in the lovely town of BuFu, Utah or at least drive as far as Vegas and then get some sleep but being the idiots manly men that they are, they drove straight through the night, arriving home at 3:00am Sunday.

I had also assumed that since it was the middle of the night that the boys would want to go straight to bed but those two teenage boys took a shower, not together because although they are BFF's, they aren't THAT kind of friends not that there's anything wrong with that, and then those knuckleheads announced they were going to a party.  At 3:30am.  I believe my response was something along the lines of "I don't think so" but they explained that while they were driving home from BuFu Utah, their friends and classmates were attending the Prom and since they missed the Prom because of the race, they wanted to at least attend the After-Prom Party so I let them go and they were back home by 9:00am at which time the weekend's activities caught up with them and they both went face down for a couple of hours.

So once again, Thing 1's racing career has come to a screeching halt.  His poor team owner is probably thinking to himself, "Great. I picked a winner here."

Thing 1 sees the orthopedic doc on Thursday and hopefully he'll recommend an MRI to see if there's any ligament or tendon damage.

He should have gone to the Prom.  Although, knowing Kevin, he would have tripped over his date's feet (Wyatt has some big feet ha ha) and hurt himself anyway.

He just got over a broken knee cap and now this.  If he doesn't knock this nonsense off, we just may have to fire him and get a new kid.  One that doesn't get hurt.

See?  We're Caring Parents.

  1. Man, that looks awful! I can't believe not only did they drive all night, they went to a party. I would be on the couch, boo-hooing with all my might. I can't even look at that picture. It hurts too much.

  2. OUCH! But it's not like it put him out of commission or anything. I would be splayed out on the couch insisting on some serious fetching and toting. Screw it - YOU should be splayed out on the couch insisting on some serious fetching and toting. Clearly everyone needs you in the house to tell them what to do next. That would be my route (since you asked)
